Sustainability & regionality
Pedaling step by step towards a green future
The starting field of the Ötztaler Cycle Marathon sets - or rather pedals - the best example as far as sustainable mobility is concerned. However, the athletes conquer the 227 kilometer long race course using only their muscle power. The topics of sustainability and regionality are also of utmost importance to us organizers and we are therefore determined to continuously increase our efforts to that effect. Here you will find out more about all sustainable measures we are taking this year.
We have a dream. Not just the dream finishing the “Ötztaler”. Let us be exemplary cyclists and fans! How? Cycling sustainably together for a greener future at the Ötztal Cycle Marathon.
Mobility
- Arriving by public transport either by train or by bus or carpooling is recommended.
- The public bus line runs through Ötztal every half hour: convenient for all spectators on Sunday and for the participants on all other days.
- A free and guarded bicycle garage is available all weekend so that you can pick up your start package on foot or by bike.
- So that you can leave the car at the accommodation, a shuttle service to the start is offered to the participants.
- ÖRM route service is increasingly focussing on e-mobility. A total of 9 e-vehicles and 2 hybrid cars are in use.
Start package
- Our partners are on the same wavelength: Many of our sponsors and partners do without manufactured goodies and provide sustainable and regional items.
- Jute bags instead of plastic bags.
- The sustainable aspect can also be found in the 2024 participant‘s gift: a reusable stainless steel drinking bottle.
Gastronomy, refreshment stations & waste
- Regional gastronomy instead of a pasta party. All participants receive a meal voucher that can be redeemed in Ötztal's restaurants. This way we not only save plastic, but also support regional businesses.
- Food stations are run by hotels in the region with goods from regional suppliers and partners.
- The cakes at the refreshment stations come exclusively from local hobby bakers & regional businesses.
- Reusable cups and reusable or large containers are used on the route and in the sports hall to reduce waste and protect flora and fauna.
- There are designated disposal zones after each refreshment station. Here we offer all participants the opportunity to dispose of any garbage that has accumulated, which will then be separated accordingly and cleaned up immediately. The consequence if this is not adhered to according to the race regulations: Disqualification. A "zero tolerance rule" must be strictly adhered to on the course with regard to environmental pollution.
- It goes without saying: waste separation at the refreshment stations and in the finish area.
Digital First
- We will try to use as little paper as possible. Instead, we provide QR Codes and all information on the website or in our Ötztaler Radmarathon App.
Social sustainability
- More than 1,300 volunteers from the local community support this event.
- The Bike 4 Help Prologue of the Ötztal Cycle Marathon - cycling for social sustainability to support families in need in Tyrol.
- Old advertising banners are being recycled by people with disabilities. Thus the banners get a second chance and become, for example, a recycled bag.
- All participants deserve great respect, which is why even the last ones are celebrated as true winners.
- The event area is accessible without barriers. For assistance, please contact our OC team: T +43 (0) 57200 926
Further measures
- The no longer needed fitted sheets from the Ötztal accommodations find a second use to protect the racing bikes during the return transport from the course to Sölden.
Green Events Austria
With these measures, we fulfil the requirements of Green Events Austria and are a partner event. Pulling together - our partners are also taking care of the environment together with us and of course with you. Please help implement our green measures.
