SKIING AND BURNING CALORIES

How many calories do you burn while skiing? A question that has no simple answer. How many calories you actually burn on a day of skiing depends on several aspects such as intensity, duration and terrain in which you are skiing. And of course, how much “Kaiserschmarren” you ate in the mountain hut before, ha-ha. But seriously: Here you will find interesting facts about calorie consumption when skiing. And very useful advice on how to get rid of many calories very quickly in the Sölden ski area!

EVERY SKIER IS DIFFERENT

Do a professional of the Alpine Ski World Cup Team and the average skier carving down the same slope burn exactly the same number of calories? Rather unlikely! And here we come to the main crux of how many calories you actually burn while skiing. Because no one, and therefore no skier, is like everyone else! The following factors can strongly influence how many calories we burn while skiing:

  • Skiing style
  • Weight
  • Difficulty of the slope
  • Ski equipment
  • Temperature

HOW HIGH IS THE CALORIE CONSUMPTION WHEN SKIING

Even if we cannot give you an exact number, we can make a guess. If we assume an average but ambitious skier who skis for an entire hour on a moderately difficult (red) slope, this skier burns between 400 and 600 calories.

Depending on whether you put more or less pressure on the ski edges and how you use your body weight, the number of calories burnt can of course vary. An interesting detail: The daytime temperature on the day of skiing also influences calorie consumption. Therefore you burn more calories on cold winter days than on a warm spring skiing day.

Ski challenges in Sölden to shred calories

Without a bad conscience you can stop at a mountain hut or restaurant and enjoy a “Tirolean Groestl” or “Kaiserschmarren”, because there are quite a few ski challenges in the ski area that let the calories burn really quickly. 3 great examples:

SÖLDEN'S (AND AUSTRIA'S) LONGEST SKI RUN

Skiing down from Schwarze Schneide - at 3340 meters the highest point of the entire ski area - Austria's longest slope can be found in Sölden. The downhill stretch from the glacier meanders over 15 kilometers (and almost 2000 altitude meters) to the base station of Gaislachkogl Gondola. For comparison: The Lauberhorn run near Switzerland’s Wengen - the longest run in the Ski World Cup - is just 4.5 kilometers long. Burning thighs are almost inevitable! The top-to-bottom ski run is technically not too demanding and therefore also easy to master for experienced skiers.

BIG3 Rally

Big, bigger, BIG3: Sölden is Austria’s one and only ski area to have three 3000 meter high peaks, the so-called BIG3, accessible by mountain lift. In addition, there are breathtaking viewing platforms at all BIG3 spots, providing fabulous views of the snow-covered Ötztal mountains. The BIG3 Rally makes it your task to ski down from all three 3000 meter high ski mountains in one day. The entire loop is almost 50 kilometers long and can be done in about 4 hours by experienced skiers and snowboarders. You will burn approximately 2000 calories on this unrivaled ski safari - nothing stands in the way of a mouth-watering roast pork afterwards ;-)
