ÖTZTALER GLACIER ROAD
A TRUE ICON AMONG THE HIGH ALPINE ROADS
You cover 13 km on the highest road in the Eastern Alps before you arrive on scenic Rettenbach Glacier at 2,830 m. From here you can reach Tiefenbach Glacier via Europe’s highest road tunnel (Rosi-Mittermaier Tunnel). The glacier toll road is a legendary route in many ways - road cyclists climb it dripping with sweat and James Bond fans remember the spectacular chase scenes of the 007 movie “Spectre”. By the way: you can find Bond's airplane - or what is left of it - not far away in the 007 ELEMENTS Adventure World.

With an average gradient of 11%, the road climbs from 1,377 m in Sölden up to 2,830 m straight into the glacier world. The panoramic glacier road, built in 1972, is a great way to shorten the route to high alpine hikes while saving energy.

Good to know
- The Summer Card includes one free ride on the public bus per day
- It is recommended to take snow chains with you in the autumn months: it can sometimes snow unexpectedly in this high alpine location.
- The glacier road is only open in safe driving conditions (avalanche hazard), so it may be closed temporarily.
- All skiers with a valid skipass can use the toll road free of charge in autumn, and a free glacier skibus runs between Sölden and the mountain lifts of Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers
- Sufficient parking spaces are available free of charge at Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers
- In winter the glacier road is closed to public traffic
