Description
The secret gateway to the south.
In the rear Ötztal, the Alps have a "secret gap". The Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road - road crossing 2,474 m has probably been an important connecting axis between north and south since the Stone Age. Today, excursionists no longer have to scramble laboriously over the pass, but instead curve by car or motorcycle along the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road from Obergurgl into the South Tyrolean Passeier Valley. The highest pass crossing in the Eastern Alps opens up spectacular views of high alpine nature for travelers - and marks the unique Timmelsjoch experience with 5 adventure stations.
Bend after bend a pleasure.
Those who like winding roads will love the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road. The panorama all around makes even passionate drivers slow down at some points and enjoy the view. From lush green alpine meadows and alpine rose slopes in Hochgurgl, the road climbs up into barren, high alpine terrain, where even in summer many a snowfield lines the roadway and sheep, goats or even ibexes cross the path to the pass summit. An experience not only by car, the route has also long been a cult among motorcycle fans and racing cyclists. The 60 km drive from Obergurgl via the toll Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road to the spa town of Merano takes only about 1.5 hours - ideal for a day trip from the high mountains to the Mediterranean-like climate between South Tyrolean vineyards.
The road is only passable in the summer months, usually from the end of May until October. In April, the extensive snow clearing work begins, and snow depths of up to ten meters often have to be removed.
Attention: free travel with the Summer Card only with buses of the ÖVG and Postbus according to the public timetable, available in all information offices of the Ötztal.
